FUNCTION OF THE ARIZONA STATE VETERINARY MEDICAL EXAMINING 
BOARD (BOARD): 

The primary duty of the Board is to protect the public from unlawful, incompetent, 
unqualified, impaired or unprofessional practitioners of veterinary medicine through licensure 
and regulation of the profession in this state. It regulates the veterinarians and facilities in 
Arizona that care for animals and keeps records of all licensees and certificate holders, board 
actions and the receipt and disbursal of monies. The Board determines which veterinarians and 
facilities are qualified to be licensed in Arizona and which veterinary technicians are qualified 
to be certified. The Board responds to consumer complaints regarding veterinarians and 
veterinary care facilities through investigation and determination of legal standards for the 
acceptable care of animals. 


STATUTORY REQUIREMENTS FOR POSITION: 

Statute requires that there be an Arizona State Veterinary Medical Examining Board consisting 
of nine members appointed by the Governor. Each member serves a five-year term and no 
member may serve more than two full terms. Five members must be licensed veterinarians 
who have an established practice located in this state or are employed by a university or a 
political subdivision of the state and who have resided and practiced in the state for five years 
immediately preceding appointment; no more than three may be from the same veterinary 
college. Four members are required to be lay persons: three representing the general public 
and one representing the livestock industry.

SALARY OR OTHER COMPENSATION: 

Statute requires that each member of the Board receives compensation not to exceed $100 for 
each day engaged in the service of the Board. 


BUDGET AND FTES: 
The Joint Legislative Budget Committee includes $460,500 and 5.5 FTE positions from the 
Veterinary Medical Examining Board Fund for the operating budget in FY 2008-2009.
